Hellbender Is Here

Asheville's Newest Outdoor Music Venue Opens This Month

Big news for live music lovers in Asheville — there's a brand-new outdoor venue in town, and it's opening its gates this July. Meet Hellbender by The Orange Peel, a roughly three-acre riverside concert site tucked along a bend in the Swannanoa River at 151 Thompson Street, just off Swannanoa River Road in East Asheville.

If the name The Orange Peel rings a bell, it should. The team behind one of Asheville's most beloved downtown music halls — with more than two decades of bringing top-tier acts to town — is the same crew launching this new open-air spot. And they're doing it with the kind of local-first mindset that makes this feel like a genuine community win.

Why "Hellbender"?

The venue takes its name from the hellbender salamander, the giant amphibian native to Western North Carolina's rivers and streams. Hellbenders are known for their longevity, their adaptability, and their sensitivity to the health of the waterways they call home — a fitting mascot for a venue built right on the riverbank, by a team that's made it clear they intend to be thoughtful, sustainable stewards of the site for the long haul.

There's a deeper local story here, too. The property includes the site of the former Cursus Keme brewery, a neighborhood favorite that closed after Hurricane Helene. The Orange Peel team has said they see Hellbender as part of rebuilding and re-energizing the Swannanoa River Road corridor, an area that was hit hard by the storm. In other words, this isn't just a new place to catch a show — it's a piece of Asheville's recovery story.

What to Expect at a Show

Hellbender is primarily a general admission, standing outdoor venue with a gently graded concert lawn, plus a limited number of first-come, first-served seats in Preferred and Standard sections at most shows. A few things worth knowing before you go:

Seating and comfort. Outside chairs aren't allowed, but you can rent a folding chair for $10 at the merch tent on show day, or bring a small beach towel or mat (3' x 5' or smaller) to spread out on the lawn. There's also a shaded riverside viewing area with bench seating and hammocks — arrive early if you want to snag one of those spots.

Getting there. Parking is the big one to plan ahead for. There's no street parking anywhere around the venue, and the city will be enforcing that. Your options are free parking with a shuttle from the Asheville Mall, prepaid reserved parking in nearby lots, rideshare drop-off at 9 Mulvaney Street, or biking and walking (bike parking is available at both gates). One more note: skip the Fairview Road-to-Glendale Avenue route through Oakley — traffic management will be in place to keep concert traffic out of that residential stretch.

Family friendly. Shows are all ages unless otherwise noted, and kids three and under get in free. Hearing protection for the little ones is strongly encouraged.

Neighborly by design. Everything wraps by 10:00 PM in line with local sound ordinances, and the venue is asking concert-goers to be respectful of nearby homes and businesses. It's a locally owned operation that clearly cares about being a good neighbor.

Shows run rain or shine, tickets are available exclusively through hellbenderavl.com via Etix, and bags larger than 6" x 6" need to be clear to get through the gates.

A Limited 2026 Season — With More to Come

Here's the exciting part: this month kicks off a limited 2026 concert series running July through October, with more shows still to be announced. Then, starting in Spring 2027, Hellbender plans to unveil a permanent stage and a full season of programming. What we're seeing this summer is just the opening act.

For a city that already punches way above its weight in live music, adding a riverside outdoor venue from the Orange Peel team feels like a perfect fit. Keep an eye on hellbenderavl.com for the show calendar as it fills out.
